Billy Howerdel began his musical career working for various bands as a guitar technician (i.e. Nine Inch Nails; Faith No More; David Bowie; including a brief 2-week stint with Tool, etc.,). Coincidentally, while Billy was working as a technician for rock band Fishbone back in 1992, Tool was slated as the show opener. This is where Billy and Maynard James Keenan had officially first met. Billy also became good friends with Tool guitarist Adam Jones.
In 1995/1996, Billy was busy looking around for a place to live and as fate would have it, bumped into Maynard. They agreed on sharing a place and soon became roommates. Billy worked and saved enough money to hold off rent payments while he continued penning songs. He originally intended for the band to feature a female vocalist and for the songs to be lengthy film soundtracks, but Maynard had asked to listen to a few tracks while he sang over them. In an interview, Billy recalled Maynard saying: 'Heck, I can hear myself singing on them.' Billy shortened the songs, and as we all know -- the rest is history.
